What do you dream for?

The creators and performers of "Broken Clock" on Friday night at Mayo Street Arts.

Last week MIO kicked off our Broken Clock Tour with events in Lewiston and Portland. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the film premiere, performance, and community dialogue.

Audiences at both performances wanted to hear from the cast about the play’s theme of time. We talked about how many of us have lost time while incarcerated that we’ll never get back. How time feels different inside, when the world outside moves on without us. How we long for time and connection with loved ones, whether being oppressed by systems inside or out. About creating cracks in the system that keeps our focus away from the violence in our communities, from the violence of incarceration.

We heard stories from audience members with loved ones who are incarcerated. About mothers risking everything to fight for their children. About the importance of community.

We invited everyone to dream with us. We heard dreams for:

The joy of freedom

More acceptance

Hope and second chances

The end of war

Not being afraid to say what we think

Waking people up to systems that are harming us

A response to harm that doesn’t cause more harm

Liberation from oppressive systems

A world where everyone feels loved

A world where every child feels safe

Thank you for witnessing and engaging with our creative work, and for sharing your dreams with us.

Thank you to everyone who made the performances possible, especially Bates College and Mayo Street Arts for hosting us. Thank you to filmmakers Alex Sutula and Bennett Mosseau and artist Sara Cannon for creating a beautiful film. And deep gratitude for Amanda Huotari who facilitates MIO’s creative ensemble.
